Maine's most popular soda doesn't quite hit the mark. There, I said it. Sorry, not sorry. While it may be beloved by many, it's time to admit that this iconic beverage might not be as great as it's cracked up to be.

I understand people absolutely love it, but I simply refuse to accept that the Pine Tree State's favorite sweet, carbonated beverage is this flavor. Though, I guess it does fit the demographic of being an old state.

But seriously, folks, who on Earth actually chooses root beer as their favorite soda? Well, apparently, Mainers do.

The Root Beer Obsession in Maine: A Love for Tree Bark?

According to World Population Review, Maine's most popular soda is root beer, a beverage traditionally made from sassafras tree bark. YUM! Nothing says delicious like tree bark.

Quite frankly, I'm not surprised. Just walk into a store, and there are typically 55 different brands of root beer to choose from. They range from the iconic A&W to numerous locally made craft versions. One would imagine there's a reason for all the supply (it would be demand—that's the only thing I remember from Economics 101).

Root beer is also one of the healthier sodas, though I’m using the term "healthy" very loosely. According to the site habitforge.com, the barky liquid is high in vitamin B, potassium, and calcium, and can work as an appetite suppressor.

While that is all great, it still doesn’t make root beer taste good. Do folks really enjoy root beer over a delicious Coke, Diet Coke, Fresca, Sunkist, Crush, every Fanta flavor, every Jarritos flavor, Mexican Coke, Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Sprite, Ginger Ale, Coke Zero, every Welch's flavor, Mountain Dew, Tab, RC Cola, Squirt, Pepsi Max, the weird Hi-C Orange at McDonald's, or every craft soda that isn’t root beer? I just don’t understand it.

I guess I just need to live with the fact that I’m the outlier in this state—a simple man with much better taste than the rest. I know, it’s a burden.

I will agree with this: I'd much rather drink root beer than that vile Moxie elixir. That motor oil makes root beer taste like fine wine.
