There are very few landmarks in Maine that capture the heart of the state like Portland Head Light.

Located in Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, Portland Head Light is a beautiful beacon that has helped lead sailors to safety since the late 1700s.

The lighthouse has always been a popular destination, and now it's receiving the well-deserved distinction as New England's most stunning.

New England's Most Stunning Lighthouses Can Be Found Region Wide

The popular site New England Wanderlust put together a list of the most stunning lighthouses in the region. The list rightfully included many from Maine, like West Quoddy and Marshall Point. However, the cream of the crop was Portland Head Light.

It's not surprising to see Portland Head Light receive this kind of recognition. It's easily one of the most recognizable structures in not just Maine, but New England. Plus, it's absolutely stunning, with pristine landscaping surrounding it.

Portland Head Light is New England's Most Stunning Lighthouse

Portland Head Light is supposedly one of the most photographed lighthouses in America. This makes sense, considering how popular Fort Williams Park, the home of Portland Head, truly is. The number of Mainers and tourists who photograph it from the water must be quite significant. Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the number of commercials and video productions featuring the famous light.

Here’s a quote from New England Wanderlust on why it selected Portland Head Light as New England's most stunning:

The most famous and iconic lighthouse in New England, and possibly the entire country, is Portland Head Light, which can be found just south of Portland in Cape Elizabeth. Because of the gorgeous coastline, and the scenic walking paths that offer so many amazing perspectives of the lighthouse, this is the one to see on your trip to New England.

It does help that Portland Head Light is easily accessible, but that should not take away from how incredible it is to see in person.

I would also recommend getting on a boat and witnessing it from the ocean. It's an absolute gem of a landmark, especially seeing it as sailors have seen it over the past 200 or so years.
