New Report Ranks Portland, Maine as One of America’s Most Wholesome Cities
It’s the time of year for giving.
Whether it’s giving gifts, giving thanks, or just sharing your wonderful spirit with the world, this is the season for all of it to shine in the spotlight. And, at least according to a new report, Portland isn’t just a great place for giving—it’s also generally quite wholesome.
WalletHub, a personal finance website, recently published its annual report on the most sinful cities in America. Nearly 200 cities were included in the study, and Portland was practically dead last—which, for this report, is a good thing.
Portland finished 177th out of 182 total cities. That’s quite the wholesome score for the Forest City.
How "Sinful" is Portland, Maine?
Portland’s actual “sinful” score was just 27.50 out of 100 total points. The scoring was based on seven major categories: Anger & Hatred, Jealousy, Greed, Excess & Vices, Lust, Vanity, and Laziness. Each category was further broken down into 37 subcategories to produce the most accurate score possible.
Portland ranked extraordinarily low in nearly every category, which again is a very good thing. Its lowest score came in Lust, where it ranked 173rd. This category included metrics like the number of adult entertainment centers and teen pregnancy rates. What a combination, WalletHub.
Its highest score came in the Greed category, where it finished 68th. It was the only category in which Portland ranked in the top 100. This category included factors such as the percentage of adults with gambling disorders and a lack of charitable giving. (Honestly, this might be my favorite study ever.)
Overall, Portland was an absolute saint in a seven-deadly-sins disaster of American cities. We should all take pride in the fact that we seem to be doing a lot right here—especially from a moral standpoint.

Portland also ranked as the most wholesome city in New England, with Bridgeport, Connecticut, coming in just above it at 175th overall. Boy, do I disagree with that.
What's the Most "Sinful" City in America?
As for the most sinful city in America? Well, that’s an easy one—it’s Las Vegas, of course. I mean, it’s literally nicknamed Sin City. The rest of the top five included Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Atlanta.
The most wholesome city overall was Columbia, Maryland. You can find the full list of sinful cities here.
