This Portsmouth Gem on Route 1 Was Named the Best New Hampshire Mexican Restaurant
As someone who’s always chasing that next unforgettable bite, I take “best in the state” titles pretty seriously.
So when I came across Lovefood naming Vida Cantina as New Hampshire’s top Mexican restaurant, I knew this was a spot that deserved a closer look.
Honestly, it's a spot I’m now itching to try myself.
Vida Cantina Named Best Mexican Restaurant in New Hampshire
Let’s be real, New England isn’t always the first place that comes to mind for standout Mexican cuisine. That’s what makes this recognition such a big deal.
According to Lovefood, Vida Cantina isn’t just good... it’s drawing people off the beaten path on Route 1 with a bold, modern take on traditional flavors.
And that’s exactly the kind of place I love discovering.
Chef-owner Dave Vargas leans into his Mexican heritage while also pulling inspiration from the coastal charm of Portsmouth. That combination alone has me curious, but it’s the menu that really seals it.
We’re talking inventive tacos that go way beyond the ordinary: fried avocado, shrimp, and even pork belly that’s being described as “out-of-this-world.”
That’s not your average taco night! That’s a whole experience.
As a foodie, those are the places that stick with you, the ones that surprise you, push expectations, and make you rethink what food can be.
And that’s exactly why Lovefood’s spotlight on Vida Cantina resonated with me. It’s not just about being "the best," it’s about bringing something fresh, creative, and a little unexpected to the table.
HiFi Burritos in Dover, New Hampshire, Has Great Mexican Food
That same energy is exactly what I’ve been searching for since moving to the area, and I’ve actually found a similar spark at HiFi Burritos in Dover.
After trying a few different Mexican spots locally, HiFi Burritos is the one that really stood out. Like Vida Cantina, it’s not afraid to step outside the box.
Sure, you’ll find your classic proteins, but they also lean into unique options like tofu and sweet potato chunks, already a sign they’re thinking beyond the basics. Then come the flavors that really set it apart: citrus slaw, orange cumin vinaigrette, spicy chipotle, carrot habanero, spicy mayo, ranchero: each one adding a different layer of flavor.
And it doesn’t stop there. You can customize everything from your base (Mexican or brown rice) to toppings like pickled red onion and jalapeño, and even finish it off with a crumbled chip topping for that perfect crunch. Fresh, high-quality, and full of flavor!
Even the queso has its own twist, with a subtle peppery kick that makes you do a double-take.

So yes, I’ll absolutely be adding Vida Cantina to my must-visit list.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: sometimes the best meals aren’t where you expect them, they’re where passion, creativity, and culture come together on one plate.
