The grocery store competition in Lewiston, Maine, is about to lessen as one of the longest-running chains in the city is planning their exit.

That would be Save-a-Lot, who took to social media to announce that their store located at the Lewiston Mall would be closing permanently.

While an official closing date was not part of the social media post, the store indicated it would be discounting items as they liquidate inventory in their final days.

Hannaford will transform the 51,00 square foot area into a fully functional location, with a full-service pharmacy and Hannaford to-go capabilities.

The Lewiston Mall location will be the second Hannaford store in Lewiston. Demolition of the old Sears department store has already taken place. Hannaford hopes to have their new Lewiston location opened sometime in early-2027.

Less than 3 years ago, Save-a-Lot had invested resources and remodeled their Lewiston Mall location. It doesn't appear the business plans to move to another location in the city.

When Save-a-Lot permanently closes in Lewiston, it will leave only four remaining locations in Maine. The Portland, Norway, Presque Isle and Caribou locations will continue operations as normal.
