Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor, better known as Lorde, is turning 18 this week (Nov. 7). This teen turned a lot of ears her way with her debut album, 'Pure Heoine,' in 2013. Her musical path, however, goes back a few years before that.

By age five she was singing at home, and by age 13 she was performing on the radio in her native New Zealand. One of the songs in her repertoire at the tender age of 12, was a cover of the Kings of Leon song 'Use Somebody' -- audio of this radio session has just turned up. Check it out above.

One listen to the song and you are caught by how at a very young age, she was singing in a voice beyond her years; not many pre-teens can sound that convincing. Accompanied only by a solo acoustic guitar, Lorde boils down the song to its core, discarding any slightly 'anthemic' tendencies the Kings Of Leon original had attached to it. Even at 12, you can tell there is something more.

'Use Somebody' was a Top 10 hit in 2008 for Kings Of Leon in many countries across the globe, including New Zealand. Compare Lorde's cover with the original:
