Tragedy struck off the coast of Maine off Bailey Island in Harpswell yesterday, July 27th.

For the first time in Maine history, a swimmer was attacked and killed by a shark. According to News Center Maine, it was a 63-year-old woman named Julie Dimperio Holowach of New York City.

In response, nearby state parks Popham and Reid have enacted a temporary rule that swimmers will not be allowed to go in the water any further than waist-deep.

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry did not provide an end date for the new rule but said that it could change without notice.

What happened off Bailey Island was no less than tragic. It's a reminder to all of us that Maine wildlife can be dangerous. Whether it be on land or sea.

At the end of the day, if we choose to enter their home, we must consider the risk.
