Maine Currently Carries Fifth-Highest Tax Burden in Nation
A common complain you'll hear throughout Maine is that the taxes are just too high.
That isn't really a Democrat or Republican thing, either. Both political parties have held power in the state over the last two decades and the tax burden for the residents of Maine has continued to rise.
With the latest tax day officially in the rear view, Business Inside has released a new report showcasing which states in the nation carry the highest and lowest tax burden per their residents.
And it's not a good look for Maine.
Maine Residents Spend 10% of Their Income on Local and State Taxes
Based on the study done by WalletHub, Maine ranks fifth in the nation when it comes to tax burden.
Maine residents dish out roughly 10% of their total income to local, state and income taxes. This does not include standard federal taxes or withholdings like Social Security and Medicare.
Nearly 4% of that tax burden for Maine residents is property tax. Maine currently ranks 5 overall in the country in property tax burden alone.
New Hampshire Residents Have One of the Lowest Tax Burdens in the Nation
While the residents of Maine are being crushed by local and state taxes, the residents of New Hampshire are living much differently.
Residents of New Hampshire carry the second-least tax burden of any state in the nation. New Hampshire residents spend 5.4% of their income on local and state taxes. Just about half of what Maine does.
The almost non-existent state income tax rate as well as sales tax rate allow residents of New Hampshire to live almost burden-free.
