Maine Ranks 6th Best State in the US for Women
Women’s History Month, celebrated every March, is a time to recognize and honor the countless contributions women have made throughout history. It's also a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come and acknowledge the work still needed to achieve full gender equality.
It’s hard to ignore the fact that women are still facing challenges when it comes to pay equity and representation in top executive roles. But here's a little bright spot to report for us Mainers—according to WalletHub's 2025 report on the Best & Worst States for Women, Maine is one of the top performers, landing in 6th place overall.
Maine has made big strides in areas that matter to women, WalletHub ranked us 5th for women's preventive health care and 14th in both poverty rates and high school graduation rates for women. It's clear that the state is working to create a better environment for women in terms of health, education, and opportunities.
However, Maine still has room for improvement—especially when it comes to unemployment, where women are still lagging behind. WalletHub says our state ranks 24th in this category, and with female uninsured rates sitting at 17th, it’s evident there are some hurdles to overcome. Yet, for many women, the overall picture is a lot more optimistic.
Maine continues to be a great place for women looking to live in a community with good healthcare options, access to education, and a reasonable cost of living. While there’s more work to do, the state is on the right path and is making progress where it counts most.
