New Study Says Most People in Maine Sleep Like Garbage
There are so many delightful sounds and smells throughout the state of Maine, whether you're by the water and can hear the crashing of the waves, or further inland with crickets playing a symphony every night. There's the salty air or the scent of flower meadows all around the state.
You'd think with all of these relaxing smells and sounds that the people of Maine would be some of the most well-rested residents of any state in the nation. And of course, you'd be dead wrong about that.
Maine Has a Difficult Time Sleeping Well
According to Nap Lab, Maine ranks amongst the worst states in America in a variety of factors, involving quality of sleep. A list of factors rank Maine as the 4th worst state in the nation. One of the key factors is simply the amount of inefficient sleep people get.
Maine is one of the 10 worst states in the country when it comes to inefficient sleep. That could mean things like tossing and turning regularly, having a late bedtime and early wake-up, or anything else relating to not getting enough deep sleep.
The Dangers of Not Getting Enough Quality Sleep
There are plenty of dangers associated with not getting enough quality sleep. Your risk for a stroke or a heart attack can increase by as a much as 20% if you're someone who regularly gets poor sleep.
But recent studies have also show a decline in people's immune systems thanks to a lack of quality sleep. The same goes for your metabolism. Lack of quality sleep can make it more difficult for you to burn calories and lose weight.
Maine Doesn't Help Itself With Quality of Sleep
Some of the other key factors Nap Lab used to make their rankings include things like depression rate, physical fitness rate, alcohol consumption rate, and illicit drug use rate.
The good news? Maine ranks moderately in all of those factors. Not near the top, but also not at the bottom. The bad news? When you combine them all together, it tells the story that nearly every adult in Maine carries a vice with them that disproportionately makes them sleep like garbage.
