Mulligan’s in Biddeford, Maine, to Permanently Close
It happens in towns and cities across Maine. Places that you could never imagine closing finally do.
For a lot of spots throughout southern Maine, change has been happening for more than a decade. Older buildings get revitalized, new businesses move in and older businesses fight to stay relevant.
That has been the story in Biddeford, Maine, for quite some time. With high rent and limited spaces in Portland, many businesses have chosen Biddeford as a back up plan.
Within the trendy cocktail bars, high end restaurants and unique breweries has sat a relic from the past. A tavern known for cheap food and cheap drinks. Mulligan's.
Mulligan's To Shut Down in Biddeford, Maine, on May 31
Founded in 1997, it didn't take long for Mulligan's to make a name for itself amongst the locals in Biddeford, Maine.
It was one of the very first restaurants to move into a redeveloped mill area in Biddeford.
Original owner George Sharkey had an instinct for keeping Mulligan's top of mind and evolved the restaurant and pub over the years.
But according to the Biddeford Gazette, after Sharkey's passing and a change in ownership, keeping Mulligan's relevant has been a struggle.
That struggle will force the longtime Biddeford business to close for good on Sunday, May 31.
The Changing Landscape Around Mulligan's Effected Its Bottom Line
If you've spent any time in Biddeford over the last 20 years, you know that the neighborhood where Mulligan's sits has seen significant change.
In 2022, the Lincoln Hotel opened across the street from Mulligan's. The Lincoln joined a growing number or small restaurants offering dynamic cuisine in the same area of Biddeford.
More development has taken place in the last couple of years squeezing patron parking for Mulligan's.
The old tavern began to stand out and not in a good way. When it finally closes on May 31, don't be surprised to see a quick redevelopment of the property where so many people spent so many memorable nights.
