My Spilled Groceries Taught Me Something About Cucumbers and Cats

You know how Mondays go right? Just when you think It can't get any worse, it does. That was my Monday this week.

I stopped at the grocery store on the way home and when I was finished shopping, I loaded my one bag into the back seat. I suppose I should have put a seatbelt around it because when I got home and opened the door, the bag had shifted and was leaning against the door so all its contents spilled out onto the ground. Great.

So to vent my frustration to the world, which I often do, I posted this picture to my Facebook page writing "Great thanks. How's your day?"

People posted a lot of comments, including Brittany with a comment I totally expected.

But there were several other comments about cats that I didn't understand at all.

So confused! What do cats have to do with cucumbers?

So, like anything that I have questions about, I turned to the Google machine and simply searched for "cats and cucumbers" and learned something that I never knew. Cats are afraid of cucumbers. For real. And I was served up hundreds of videos of cats freaking out when their owners place a cucumber behind them and they turn to discover it. Typically they jump three feet in the air to get away from it.

I'm always the last to know these things, but not satisfied with the knowledge that cats are afraid of cucumbers, I wanted to know WHY cats are afraid of cucumbers.

According to ABC News, cats are genetically hard-wired through instinct to avoid snakes. And to a cat cucumbers look like snakes, so they freak out. Bananas also can do the same to some cats.

So yeah, I spent a whole day watching catch getting scared by cucumbers, but this is still the cat video I can watch over and over again.
