A massive multi-car crash involving about 30 vehicles took place Tuesday morning on I-95 northbound, according to the Maine State Police in an updated Facebook post. Police earlier in the morning had reported on a possible 50 to 60 vehicles in the accident.

The crash was near mile marker 174 in Carmel.

Police said that "initial reports say blinding sun may have caused the first crash about 7:45 AM, and then several other vehicles collided in a chain reaction."

The Maine State Police added that LifeFlight was sent out to the scene as there were multiple injuries reported. In the police's Facebook update, they stated that there was one serious injury, but that person was transported to a Bangor hospital.

Multiple wreckers from the Bangor region are assisting troopers on scene.

If you are headed north, police noted to take exit 157 in Newport to avoid the accident.

Police stated that the "northbound lanes are closed and will likely remain closed for much of the day." Though, in their update, they did say it's expected to be closed until at least noon.

Apparently there are hundreds of vehicles stranded behind the crash site, and troopers are working to get those people turned around.

You can see one of the helicopters touching down in this video Tweet from Brian Sullivan and one from News Center Maine.

And below are some photos tweeted by WGME courtesy of Lynn Jandreau of the crash:

The Maine Department of Transportation in a Facebook post showed a scene from the crash as well as what the sun looked like while driving northbound. And it looks pretty tough to see with what looks like a blinding light.
