Parent Starts ‘No Kid Leaves Empty Handed’ at Line Elementary School in Newfield, Maine

Line Elementary School in Newfield, Maine is not a rich school and one parent is trying to help kids feel included.

Julie Tibbetts is a parent who cares about the kids at Line Elementary. It is one of Maine's more economically challenged schools. The staff is incredible and caring, but the students don't have a lot of spare money to go around. Nearly half of the students are on free or reduced lunch.

She knows that when book fairs come, a lot of these kids won't have money to buy a book or really anything offered. She will be volunteering at the Scholastic Book Fair on April 5th and 6th at the school. She has hatched a plan to help kids buy books or trinkets for those who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford them. She is calling it her 'No Kid Leaves Empty-Handed on My Watch Scholastic Initiative'.

There are 248 children on free and reduced lunch so she was hoping to raise around $500. She figures that's enough for them to either get a book or at least a bookmark or pencil.

Thank you, Julie, and all the parents and teachers for going above and beyond to help kids. The last two years have shown all of us just how incredibly important schools are in our lives. So when we can make it a little easier, we should all do whatever we can!
