Here’s What is Replacing The Yard in Portland’s Bayside Neighborhood
More than a year and a half ago, one of the most popular gathering spots in Portland, Maine, abruptly closed right as it seemed it was on the precipice of even bigger things. That would The Yard, whose owners decided time with family was more important.
The owners had worked hard to help establish the Bayside neighborhood as a destination. They morphed their initial concept of a country bar, the Whiskey Barrel, into a upscale burgers, milkshakes, and cocktails bar called The Yard.
After finding their footing during covid with unique outdoor seating options and memorable decor, The Yard had plans to open a swanky rooftop deck in 2022 before closing down permanently. After more than 18 months of vacancy, a new restaurant and bar will pick up pieces.
According to Portland Food Map, Bar Publica will move into the vacated space left behind by The Yard. The project is being spearheaded by Spencer Bradley (co-owner of neighboring Wilson County Barbecue), as well as Ri Ra founders David Kelley and Ciaran Sheehan.
Bar Publica will have a full selection of beer and wine offerings, as well as signature cocktails. Their food concept will be Latin-American small plates. Bar Publica plans to complete the rooftop deck project left behind by The Yard in hopes of having it operational for next year.
Bar Publica will join another new tenant in the same building. Argenta Brewing has taken over the space vacated by Banded Brewing. Bar Publica hopes to be open for the spring of next year.
