A massive mixed-use development that will change the look of Portland's waterfront was unanimously approved Tuesday night by the planning board.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Portland's Planning Board approved a development project on 10 acres of the former Portland Company, which manufactured locomotives and railcars for nearly 130 years before closing down in 1978.

The site of the former Grand Trunk Railroad station and rail yard adjacent to the Portland Company was recently developed adding several large, modern buildings including a new headquarters for WEX.

Portland Foreside Development Company plans to build 442,500 square feet that include office, retail and housing space.

There are also plans to include a 5-story parking garage with over 700 spaces. Construction is planned to start in April and will spaces occupied by 2022.
