Binga’s is Never Going to Open In Portland, Maine, But Something Else Will
Almost three years ago, a sports bar that had become a staple of the Old Port closed its doors for good. That place was Binga's Stadium, where so many had shared incredible memories of the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and Patriots winning championships.
That Old Port location had been in business for 17 years and when it closed, it seemed like the end of an era. But shortly after that closure, Binga's announced that they were planning a new location in Portland. They'd be taking over the former Maelily and Ryleigh's restaurant on Forest Avenue.
For about two years, the sign outside of the restaurant read 'Binga's Coming Soon' and then just 'coming soon'. As recently as just a couple months ago, the restaurant seemed to be untouched and the sign no longer read anything, removing all mention of Binga's or anything arriving.
According to the Portland Press Herald, instead of Binga's, Portland is set for the newest location of Smoked. Back in December, the pair of business partners that owned all Binga's locations parted ways. In the split, Binga's Windham became Smoked and the lease for the potential Portland location was passed on to Smoked.
Smoked Portland will serve a menu similar to the one in Windham. Guests will find an array of smoked meats alongside traditional pub fare like salads, burgers, sandwiches and more. During the warmer months, there will be outside seating at the restaurant as well.
What about the sign? Smoked Windham has become notorious for funny quips that get plenty of attention on social media. While Smoked Portland hasn't confirmed that they'll bring their sign game to the big city, it would seem like a missed opportunity if they didn't.
Smoked Portland hopes to be open in March.
