It was 18 years ago today that we all woke up to the horrible reality of the terrorist attack on the twin towers. Since then, we've all remembered where we were and what we were doing on that day, thinking of those who were closer to the event and whose lives were struck with tragedy.

In Maine, there are plenty of commemorative events going on today to honor lives lost or touched by the events of 9/11/2001.

One excellent way to commemorate Patriot day is to donate blood.

The Red Cross is always looking for donors and there are a few events happening across Maine for you to choose from:

For any of the below blood drives, schedule your appointment at RedCrossBlood.org, call 1-800-RED CROSS or use the Blood Donor App. Enter sponsor code: REMEMBER.

AUBURN: 9/11 Day of Remembrance Blood Drive, 1pm-6pm at Auburn Fire Department, 550 Minot Avenue.

AUGUSTA: 9/11 Day of Remembrance Blood Drive, 11a- 6p at Augusta Civic Center, 76 Community Drive.

PORTLAND: 9/11 Day of Remembrance Blood Drive, 12p - 5p at Portland Elks Club, 1945 Congress St. Hosted by the Portland Fire Department.

If giving blood isn't your cup of tea or you are unable to donate blood for any reason, worry not. You can honor 9/11 in a different way if you live near Waterville:

WATERVILLE: Candlelight Vigil, 6pm at Waterville Riverwalk. Guest speakers and local first responders will be there to commemorate the day's history.
