A referee was hit in the face when a cannon fired from the sidelines of a Maine Maritime Academy football game this past weekend.

According to News Center Maine, the cannon was brought by a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and was loaded with gun powder and a wad of material that the owner had put together.

After Maine Maritime scored, he fired the cannon from the sideline of the end zone just as a referee was walking past it, hitting him in the face. The incident was caught on video.

The referee is recovering from non-life threatening injuries while the Hancock County Sheriff's Department is investigating and may file criminal charges against the person who fired the cannon.

I'm sure that the cannon owner had good intentions when he brought it to the game as it is a tradition at many football games to fire a cannon when the home team scores, but this may not have been the best place to do it.
