It really doesn't seem that long ago for sports fans in Portland, Maine, that they would pile it in to one of the most popular sports bars in the city, Rivalries.

Located right by the Cross Insurance Arena, Rivalries made a name for itself as a pregame spot for live games at the arena and a gathering spot for big games on television. And of course, because of Thai chili tenders as well.

But in February of 2023, a two-decade run as one of Portland's most beloved sports bars came to end. While Rivalries closed in Portland, it still exists today at their Falmouth location exclusively.

However, something new is set to open in the former Rivalries location with a different concept for the space that hasn't been tried before.

But Sawyer's won't simply be butcher shop. It'll also be home to a deli, that will feature meats and a handful of signature sandwiches. Sawyer's will also feature a line of dog food for those that want to treat their best friend to some really good stuff.

Sawyer's Butcher & Delicatessen hopes to be open sometime in July.

Thistle and Grouse Didn't Work Out at the Old Rivalries Spot in Portland, Maine

In between Rivalries closing and the new Sawyer's venture opening, there was another business that tried to make the space at 10 Cotton Street work.

That would be Thistle & Grouse, an upscale gastropub that opened in December of 2023 and closed a mere 10 months later citing several issues around finances.
