Tonight, the Skowhegan School Board voted to retire the official "Indians" mascot after months of contentious hearings and debate.

WGME-13 is reporting that the school board voted 14-9 in favor of a resolution to officially dump the moniker.

This vote follows several heated debates about the use and future of the mascot name, and Skowhegan was one of the last schools in the state to still use the name "Indians" for its sports teams.

Even on the night of the vote, supporters and opponents of the name change attended the meeting with signs and buttons to plead their case.

There's no word yet on what the new mascot name will be, or how it will be chosen.
