SNL’s ‘Weekend Update’ Officially Going Primetime in August
The rumors are true: SNL is taking Weekend Update out for a primetime spin once more. Seeing as today’s news is never not in need of incisive comedy, Colin Jost and Michael Che will end their summer breaks early to bring new half-hour Weekend Update episodes to NBC.
Per the network’s official confirmation, Saturday Night Live: Weekend Update will air four half-hour episodes beginning on Thursday, August 10 at 9:00 P.M. Jost and Che will of course anchor the desk (so much for a shakeup in Season 43), while additional SNL cast members are expected to drop by.
Says NBC:
SNL is having its best season in a quarter of a century – how many shows can say that?! – so we didn’t want them to take the summer off. We’re thrilled to have Colin Jost and Michael Che continuing their unique brand of news with fresh ‘Weekend Update’ shows in primetime this August.
It won’t be the first time Weekend Update has left SNL behind, as prior to Jost and Che’s bits at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, 2008 saw the launch of Seth Meyers’ Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday, which also ran episodes in 2009 and 2012.
In the meantime, Jost and Che will continue on as Weekend Update hosts through the next show, featuring Louis C.K.’s return and musical guest The Chainsmokers.
