Still waiting? Make sure that you don't mistakenly throw away your money!

If you haven't already received your government economic impact payment, which is more commonly known as a stimulus payment, be aware that it may show up in your mailbox as a debit card.

Whoops.  Have that sudden urge to dig through the trash now?

Some 8 million households will receive their economic impact payment as a debit card.  Single tax filers will receive $600 and married couples who file jointly get $1200.  Big money to most people.  So here's the gig, pay attention to what you get in your mailbox, and don't throw your money away!

“Last month’s COVID relief package included $600 checks for most Mainers.  For some of those who have not yet received these funds, the IRS has begun mailing prepaid debit cards,” said Maine U.S. Senator Collins in a recent press release. “If you receive a letter in a white envelope that prominently displays the U.S. Department of the Treasury seal, read it carefully and don’t mistake it for a credit card offer.”

You probably get quite a few credit card offers every week that you immediately toss into the trash.  So, keep an eye out for this envelope:

The card included within will be a Visa debit card. That looks like this:

Those who receive an Economic Impact Payment by prepaid debit card can do the following without any fees:

  • Make purchases online and at any retail location where Visa is accepted
  • Get cash from in-network ATMs
  • Transfer funds to their personal bank account
  • Check their card balance online, by mobile app, or by phone
