Another Starbucks Location in Portland, Maine, Set to Close Permanently
At the end of 2022, one of the busiest coffee shops in all of Portland, Maine, closed its doors. It was the Starbucks location at 176 Middle Street, The closure was met with unease, as a month prior, employees had voted to unionize. Starbucks claimed the store closure was a landlord mandate.
Even with the Middle Street closure, the remaining two Starbucks locations in Portland's Old Port and Arts District have seemingly been busier than ever, with people looking for their fill of craft coffee drinks and specialty treats. Despite the steady stream of business, Starbucks is pulling the plug on another one of their Portland coffee shops.
According to News Center Maine, Starbucks will permanently close their location at 594 Congress Street. A spokesperson gave News Center Maine a vague explanation as to why the regularly busy location is shuttering.
Part of that statement included:
We continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio. After careful consideration, we have deemed it necessary to close our store in Portland.
It will be yet another murky closing for one of the nation's most popular coffee purveyors. While there is certainly some substantial competition nearby from other local and national chains, the Starbucks brand remains as strong as ever.
With the closure, the only remaining Starbucks location in downtown Portland will be on Commercial Street. That location is currently listed as 'temporarily closed' on Google.
The Starbucks at 564 Congress Street will remain open through the month of October. Their final operational day will be Sunday, November 5.
