Watch: Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Drummer Chad Smith Performs with Foo Fighters in NYC
Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith joined the Foo Fighters onstage in New York City last night (7/15). The drummer performed with the Foos during an encore at Citi Field and they covered Rod Stewart and Ron Wood’s Faces song “Stay with Me.” Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins took over on vocals, while Smith played the drum parts. Check out some video below and above.
During a musical interlude, Taylor Hawkins and Dave Grohl spoke about being friends with Smith. Hawkins shared with the audience, “So we went on a tour back in 1999 when we were kids and we were asked to open up for the Chili Peppers and we were like ‘Yeah, we’ll f—king do that.’ And that’s where we learned to be a band." Grohl added, "It’s sure as hell where we learned to party.”
Hawkins called Smith his "hero" because during that tour he played some of the shows drunk and still nailed the drum parts. Check out two more videos of Smith’s appearance below.
Foo Fighters played eight other covers last night at Citi Field, some in full and some used as intros to other tracks. The covers included AC/DC’s “Let Their Be Rock,” “Next to You” by The Police and the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ song “Breakdown.” Check out the night’s full setlist below (thanks to Alternative Nation).
The Foo Fighters North American tour began earlier this month and the guys have been having a grand old time, despite the fact that Grohl has been performing with a broken leg. The frontman has been performing from an extravagant throne, performing guitar solos with his broken leg, and interacting with fans while onstage. The group will play two nights at Boston’s Fenway Park on July 18 and 19 before heading to Japan for a pair of shows. Head here to check out their full tour schedule and to buy tickets.
