What Would the Seven Modern Wonders of Maine Be?
One thing's for sure: our world is filled with jaw-dropping and beautiful places.
According to Britannica, it was back in the 2nd century BCE when the 'Seven Wonders of the World' were first referenced. The term was meant to coin "architectural and sculptural achievements of the ancient Mediterranean and Middle East."
At that time, the Seven Wonders were the Pyramids of Giza, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, Statue of Zeus at Olympia (anyone else a sucker for Greek mythology?), Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes, and Pharos of Alexandria.
But of course, that was thousands of years ago. A lot of time has passed since then.
These days, Britannica says that the modern Seven Wonders are the Great Wall of China, Chichén Itzá, Petra, Machu Picchu, Christ the Redeemer, Colosseum, and Taj Mahal.
There's no question about the popularity and importance of these iconic locations. But what if we narrowed down the scope of things by zeroing in on the modern Seven Wonders of particular states?
How about Maine? What do you think the 'Seven Modern Wonders of Maine' would be?
Such a question is undeniably subjective, but we decided to ask locals for their thoughts. Here are seven places they suggested, in no particular order. What do you think?
