Yes. You need to be 21 to buy whipped cream in New York.

Why the hell would you need an ID to buy Reddi Wip or any canned whipped cream? Because of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. WABI5 reported that canned whipped cream is being abused.

Almost a year ago, legislation in New York, sponsored by Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., was passed. But it's just now that they are actually carding people who are buying whipped cream! At least the stuff in the can. You can buy Cool Whip all you want.

How exactly can you get high from canned whipped cream? It's the chargers they use known as 'whippits'. They have nitrous oxide in them. A lot of people think it's innocent enough since its nickname is laughing gas and you get it at the dentist. But used improperly, it can cause hearing loss, brain damage, limb spasms, heart failure, or suffocation, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. The cartridges were found by the thousands at a music festival in England.

It can also be very addictive. It's a concern for young people and that's why they passed legislation requiring people to be at least 21 years old. In researching if abusing nitrous oxide is a problem in Maine, I found nothing that indicated it was.

But apparently, nitrous oxide is used to boost a car's engine! This is actual legislation in Maine:

A person may operate a motor vehicle equipped with a nitrous oxide system on a public way if:
A. All canisters of nitrous oxide have been removed from the vehicle; or
B. The motor vehicle is en route to or from a track where the motor vehicle is used for racing, a car show, an off-highway competition or event, or a fill station and:
(1) The nitrous oxide system is made inoperative by disconnecting the line feeding nitrous oxide to the engine; or
(2) All containers of nitrous oxide have been removed from the motor vehicle.

Let's hope we don't have to make people show an ID to get their sundae made.
