Well, that didn’t take long.

Just a few days after Deadpool’s record-breaking haul at the box-office (the biggest opening for a film released in February, the biggest opening for an R-rated film, the biggest opening weekend in 20th Century Fox history and the biggest opening of any X-Men film), studios are already adapting to the massive success of an R-rated superhero film and adjusting accordingly. X-Men and Deadpool producer Simon Kinberg has said that while he doesn’t see the X-Men universe changing much after Deadpool’s success, he said he could definitely see another mutant-oriented superhero film getting an R-rating.

Kinberg told Collider at a post-screening Q&A of Deadpool, “X-Force I could see being R-rated.” As if he could immediately sense his quote was going to spread far and wide across the internet, Kinberg clarified, “I’m saying I could imagine a universe in which [X-Force is R-rated].” Yes, but when you’re the producer of the X-Force movie, it’s your imagination that makes these things happen.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds said that an X-Force movie is his “priority” and now that he’s the new golden boy at Fox, you can expect that priority to be coming sooner rather than later. First up, though, would be Deadpool 2, which has already gotten a greenlight and, according Mr. Pool himself in the post-credits scene, will include Cable, the leader of The X-Force.

Interestingly enough, Deadpool was originally not part of Fox’s plans for the X-Force movie. The studio was developing a project with director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2) and a lineup that included Cable, Domino, Feral, Cannonball and Warpath. But with a $135 million opening under his belt, you can bet Deadpool is going to be the star of that movie.

If Fox eventually does decide to move ahead with an R-rated X-Force film, you can bet it probably won’t be the last of them. There have already been rumblings that Warner Bros. may be looking to add additional footage to Suicide Squad, originally shot as a PG-13 film, to get that sweet R-rating.
