
WalletHub Names Augusta, Maine, Worst State Capital in Nation
Up and down the coast of Maine, you'll find towns and cities that people can't wait to visit each year.
You'll also find a town of desirable locations that people would love to call home.
But in many states, the hub of activity runs through their state capital. It's typically a city where jobs can be found, housing can be affordable and where wages are often at their peak.
According to a new study released by WalletHub. that isn't quite the case for Maine. Not even close.
WalletHub Study Finds Augusta, Maine, to Be Second-Worst State Capital Overall
WalletHub has released their 2026 Best State Capitals list that focuses in on four major factors to rate state capitals.
Those four factors include affordability, economic well-being, quality of education and health as well as just the pure quality of life.
Unfortunately for those that live and work in Augusta, Maine, WalletHub finds the state capital to be the second-worst in the nation.
Augusta received the second-lowest cumulative score based on the four major categories.
Augusta, Maine, Gets Crushed in The Economic Well-Being Category
Based on WalletHub's study, Augusta, Maine, ranked 46 out of 50 when it came to economic well-being.
Some of the major issues for Maine's state capital include the percentage of the population living in poverty and the stagnation in both population growth as well as income growth.
Augusta isn't growing in terms of people, in business or in wages.
Augusta also struggled in the quality of life category, ranking 43 out of 50.
