One Mall in Maine is On The Verge of Becoming a ‘Zombie’
It's no secret that the traditional shopping mall is struggling to survive across the country.
Here in Maine, there have been several malls that have felt the pain. Some of those malls, like the Promenade in Lewiston, have made a complete shift from being a mall into something else.
Others, like the Auburn Mall, have kept rolling along. Perhaps interest in shopping malls turns around, perhaps it doesn't.
But there's one mall in Maine that seems to be on a highway to the dead zone. Customer complaints, disputes with the city and more have put the Bangor Mall on the edge of becoming a 'zombie mall'.
A Portion of the Bangor, Maine, Mall Has Power Shut Off By the City
Over the last several years, customers have complained about the quickly deteriorating conditions at the Bangor Mall.
From a leaking roof to lingering sewage smells to other crumbling infrastructure, there are hazards lurking both inside and outside of the Bangor Mall.
According to WABI, the city of Bangor had taken notice. They recently fined the owners of the Bangor Mall more than one million dollars for a series of serious code violations.
The city has even taken the step of shutting off the power to an entire wing of the Bangor Mall out of safety concerns.
The New York Company That Owns The Bangor Mall Wants to Keep It Open
According to WABI, the New York-based company that owns and operates the Bangor Mall intends to keep the shopping space open.
In the ongoing dispute with the city, the Bangor Mall will need to be fully brought up to code by a deadline of June 15. If that doesn't happen, the entire mall could be shut down.
That outcome seems unlikely. But the Bangor Mall does seem destined to lose the faith of retailers as well as customers.
Before long, it could become the next 'zombie mall' in Maine.
