The past couple of years had been incredibly unkind to the national retailer Bed Bath & Beyond. After a tumultuous set of circumstances forced the company to close all of its brick-and-mortar stores in 2023, vacancies were left behind in a few cities throughout Maine.

That includes Brunswick, where Bed Bath and Beyond had been a significant piece of the Merrymeeting Plaza alongside several other restaurants and retailers. In February of last year, the company announced it would be closing the Brunswick location. After a lengthy vacancy, something new is going into that empty space.

It'll be a new and updated location for Planet Fitness. It'll join a new wave of businesses breathing new life into the Merrymeeting Plaza. Last year, Barnes and Noble opened their second location in Maine within the plaza.

Margarita's also opened a new location at the plaza alongside anchors like Shaw's, CVS, and Sun Tan City. There's still a couple more vacancies to be filled, but it's clear the business plaza is headed for a revival.

Planet Fitness isn't necessarily new to Brunswick. Several years ago, they operated a smaller location at 31 Gurnet Road that ended up transitioning into a different fitness center. This new location for Planet Fitness will be more in line with the gyms they've been opening across the country recently. Their new South Portland location serves as an example.

As of this writing, there is no official timetable or opening date for the new location of Planet Fitness at the Merrymeeting Plaza in Brunswick.
