Last week, we discussed the disappointing news that the City of Portland would be raising the price of parking meters citywide by 25 cents per hour starting on July 1st. But it's a classic old strategy to deliver the bad news first and follow it up with some really good news. This would count as good news.

Finally, Portland will become the first Maine city that will have an app for your smartphone that will let you keep track of the time on your parking meter as well as purchase additional time if needed. Locals who consistent use the parking meters will rejoice at this news.

The City of Portland promises that the new app, as well as the new system, will be available shortly. One thing to wonder about, is how you purchasing parking meter time from your phone will translate to the meter maids dishing out tickets, but there must be a system in place to ensure violations aren't handed out when they shouldn't be.
