Downtown Lewiston News Stand Closing After 114 Years

After over a century of doing business in downtown Lewiston, Victor News on Park Street is closing as its owners retire.

According to the Sun Journal, the original Victor News was opened in 1905 on Main Street in Lewiston by Victor L’Heureux where it remained nearly 70 years before moving to its current location on Park Street in 1971.

The news stand managed to survive in downtown Lewiston as most other stores closed up shop after the Auburn Mall opened up in 1979. It grew into more than just a news stand, becoming a full service convenience store with a deli where people working downtown could pick up breakfast and lunch, the newspaper stated.

Now, after four generations of family ownership, Victor's nephew Phil St. Pierre and wife Nancy, have decided to retire and will close Victor News after 114 years in downtown Lewiston.

In a Facebook post, the St. Pierre's said that they hope another store opens in the location to provide the needs of the area.

Victor News will remain open for a few weeks as the sell off their inventory.
