As the summertime sun and temperatures roll in, many people throughout New England will be rolling out to enjoy a vacation.

That will require hitting the road. Whether that's traversing some lesser traveled areas or hitting the highway that can jam packed with other motorists looking to get from here to there.

A recent study compiled some interesting data in an attempt to determine where the fastest drivers in America exist while also noting where the slowest drivers in the country move at their pace.

And the data showcases a surprising result for New England.

Maine Has The Fastest Drivers in New England While New Hampshire Has The Slowest

Highlighted by Mental Floss, the study looked at two key data points. Average speeds on highways and average speed on regularly traveled roads. Piecing those two data points together revealed two key things for Maine.

Those two key things is that Maine has the least amount of regular traffic in New England and that motorists in the state take advantage of it by upping their speed. The average speed of drivers in Maine is 65.8 miles per hour. Compare to that to the slowest state in the region, New Hampshire, whose drivers average 49.9 miles per hour.

There Were Some Serious Flaws With The Study

While the results of Maine having the fastest drivers in New England seem rooted in scientific data, people from Massachusetts look at their speedy and erratic driving habits as a badge of honor.

Highways in the commonwealth are typically packed with motorists which seriously affected their average driving speed. Even then, Massachusetts drivers averaged 60.2 miles per hour. You can probably safely add another 8 to 10 miles per hour to that in reality.

Maine might want to drive fast but Massachusetts lives it every day.
