Here’s How Long Mainers Have Left to Get a ‘Real ID’
If you're anything like me, you'll probably put this off until the last minute, which is fine... just don't forget!
According to WGME, Mainers have exactly one year to upgrade to the REAL ID. And if you don't get one within the next year, you might be dealing with some serious hassles.
In case you missed this in the news earlier this year, here's the story in a nutshell - the REAL ID program was created by the government to establish minimum security standards.
How do you know if your driver's license is, well, "real?" It will have a star in the upper right corner inside a gold outline of the state.
After October 1st, 2020, according to the news station, you won't be allowed access to secure federal facilities without one. But probably more important to you, you won't be able to board domestic flights without one, either.
That could cause you some serious headaches.
So to avoid all that, it's probably best that you get that taken care of sooner rather than later.
You can visit your local Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles Office to upgrade your current license to a new one.
I think I'll be taking my own advice and doing this pretty soon!
