
Maine Ranks as 5th Least Vulnerable State for Identity Theft
While it seems like every year new statistics and results are released proving just how safe Maine is, it’s still nice to see.
In 2025—and heading into 2026—identity theft risk is at an all-time high thanks to increasingly realistic AI, making it more important than ever to stay informed and take every step you can to protect yourself.

WalletHub ranked the states most vulnerable to identity theft and fraud by comparing all 50 states and Washington, D.C. across three main categories.
Those three categories—identity theft, fraud, and policy—were evaluated using 15 weighted metrics scored on a 100-point scale. WalletHub then calculated a weighted average for each state to determine an overall score, which was used to create the final rankings.

Maine ranked 47th overall in the new WalletHub report, making it the 5th least vulnerable state in the country for identity theft and fraud.
We placed 39th for identity theft, 50th for fraud, and 13th for policy strength—solid numbers that highlight how well-protected Mainers and Maine residents are.
A couple of other New England states actually ranked even less vulnerable than Maine, with Connecticut coming in at 49th and Vermont earning the title of least vulnerable at 51st.
On the flip side, Florida, California, and Georgia landed at the top of the list as the states most vulnerable to identity theft and fraud.

And there you have it! Maine was recently ranked as one of the safest and least vulnerable states in America for identity theft.
