Multi-Modal Bridge Between Saco and Biddeford, Maine is on the Table Again
For nearly 15 years, the cities of Saco and Biddeford have had discussions about building a new bridge over the Saco River. It looks like it may be getting some traction after all these years.
Why Build a Pedestrian Bridge?
According to the Biddeford Gazette, this plan has been in the “conceptual phase” for years now, but it may finally be getting some movement.
The proposal is to build a multi-modal bridge designed for pedestrians that crosses the Saco River, allowing people to walk or possibly bike between the two cities. The hope is that doing so will improve walkability, promote public transit, and reduce traffic congestion with more people using the bridge between the two cities.

Proposed Bridge Location
The bridge would be built over the Saco River near the CSX railroad bridge. Entry points would be at Saco Island and the planned Pearl Park location in Biddeford. You can see on the map above where the bridge would be. The photo below is relatively near where the Saco side of the bridge would be.
How Much Would it Cost?
If it were to go through, the whole project would cost about $5.5 million. In order for that kind of money to be put into this, Biddeford and Saco will need to get some federal funding. The Biddeford Town Council met on August 18, 2025, to listen to the proposal.
If both cities agree to go ahead with the project and request federal funding, construction could begin as early as 2028.
