Beloved Maine Meteorologist Roger Griswold Shares Cancer Diagnosis
For thousands across Maine and beyond, Roger Griswold has been a familiar and trusted voice delivering our forecast week after week for years.
I grew up with him in my living room, as many of us have.
Recently, this longtime beloved Meteorologist of WMTW shared a very personal video update on his Facebook page explaining why viewers may have noticed he’s been off-air recently.
In this deeply personal message, Griswold tells us that he is stepping away from his duties on–air for a while after being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in late February saying,
"Now it is a cancer in my blood, originating in the bone marrow. I'd never really heard of it, it's not that common. In fact, I hadn't heard of it at all, until recently."
According to the Mayo Clinic, this is a form of cancer that affects plasma cells.

He spoke about how it all began, that he had broken ribs, for no reason. Soon after that, he suffered additional broken bones in his back and his doctors were focused on finding out why this was happening.
The injuries were painful and took weeks to heal.
In the video Griswold went on to say, "the good news is, it's highly treatable and my doctors are very optimistic about the outcome"
As he spoke directly to viewers, Griswold said he wanted to share the news now that he felt ready to and reassured us that we are in good hands with the team back at WMTW.
For many of us, growing up watching him deliver the weather, he became part of our families, part of Maine. He has been a steady voice in countless homes.
So, for now, he says he plans to step away at least until the snow melts, focusing on treatment and recovery.
For so many years, Roger has been welcomed into our living rooms and become part of our lives.
Like so many across Maine, we’re wishing him strength and a smooth recovery and look forward to the day he’s back on the forecast.
