WATCH: Police Looking For This Porch Pirate in Rumford, Maine
Ripping off someone's package delivered to their porch in broad daylight seems like a stupid thing to do, but someone was stupid and lifted it off a porch in Rumford, and now police are looking for him.
Rumford Porch Pirate
On September 26, the Rumford, Maine Police Department shared this video of a man in a hoodie, likely trying to conceal his identity, walking up to a porch that had a package delivered to the front door.
Luckily, the homeowners had a video camera, but it seems like this guy was prepared with his hood deployed as he walked up to the door, grabbed the package and walked off, making it harder to identify him.
The Rumford Police posted the video on Facebook with a caption that read:
If this porch pirate could follow up w(ith) Officer Willhoite at the PD, it would be appreciated. Assuming he does not want to come to the PD, maybe someone else would be able to ID him. Thanks! 207-364-4551
As of this writing, there has been no update on this suspect. But if you recognize the person, you're asked to call Rumford Police at 207-364-4551.
How to Prevent Porch Pirates
Here are several things you can do to deter porch pirates:
- Install a video doorbell or security camera. If a camera is visible to people coming on the porch, they are less likely to try to steal a package. The camera in the video appears not to be as noticeable.
- Have packages delivered to a secure locker or a local retail location
- Arrange for delivery when someone can be home to receive the package
- Use a package lock box or porch pirate bag. They are secure containers on your porch that delivery drivers can place packages into for safekeeping.
