National Data Says Maine is One of the Grinchiest States in the US
According to Preply, a new national study has Maine towards the bottom of the list of states with the most Christmas spirit. They analyzed Google search data for popular holiday-related terms, such as Christmas carols, holiday recipes, and Christmas light displays. The states were then ranked on a per capita basis based on those search rates.
Utah apparently takes home the gold for holiday cheer, with the most festive residents and snow-dusted holiday vibes. Meanwhile, Maine is being lumped in with the Scrooges of the world. And honestly? I call blasphemy.
Maine? Lacking Christmas spirit? This surprises me. You can’t drive through a single neighborhood in this state without seeing houses lit up like the Rockefeller tree and yards filled with inflatable Santas, reindeer, and at least one neighbor’s questionable light display featuring a glowing moose.
Let’s not forget about the countless holiday events that happen across the state every year—from the magical Festival of Lights in Freeport to classic performances like The Nutcracker and holiday parades that draw crowds even when it’s 10 degrees outside.
Sure, maybe we don’t belt out carols in the streets or have synchronized light shows set to Mariah Carey (looking at you, Utah), but Maine’s got plenty of holiday heart. And anyone who’s ever had a peppermint mocha while watching snow fall over the Old Port knows that.
Hey, maybe we’re not Googling Christmas carols or holiday recipes because we’ve had them memorized since childhood—it’s called tradition.
