In May of 2025, Maine's chickadee license plates will be replaced by a new design featuring a pine tree, inspired by the Maine flag used for eight years in the early 1900s.

The design for the tree on the new plates looks more like an actual pine tree than a drawing by a child. That's just my opinion.

I currently have a license plate number that has been passed down from my grandfather to my father and now me. I want to keep it because of the history there, so I reserved my current license plate online with just a few clicks.

If you want to keep the number on your chickadee plate and have it on your new pine tree plate, you'll need to reserve it before May 1, 2025, when the pine tree plates become available. Here's how:

  • Go to the Maine License Plate Reservation Service at this link.
  • You'll need your current registration. You won't be renewing your registration, just using the info to reserve your plate.
  • Enter your control number in the upper left corner or lower left of your registration.
  • Enter your vehicle class on the right. For most people it is PC.
  • Enter your license plate number, Include all numbers, letters dashes, and spaces that your registration number may contain.
  • Enter your full name as it appears on your registration ,along with any names who are co-registers.
  • Click continue.
  • Click the checkbox where it says "Reserve your current plate number." There is a $25 fee to reserve your plate number.
  • Select if you want your plate with a pine tree or no pine tree.
  • Enter your email and phone number and pick the address where you want your new plate sent.
  • Enter your payment information with a credit or debit card, and you're done.

Now you just need to wait until May 1 when the new pine tree plates start getting distributed.
