Kanye West on Beck’s Album of the Year: ‘This Is Kind of Good’
Swinging by the radio studios of Power 105.1 in New York City, Kanye West sat down with the Breakfast Club morning show and talked music, clothing ... and Beck.
As he was talking about his clothing line, West touched on how people should be spending more money on their families, not expensive clothing. "I think this idea of being better than the next man is the wrong mentality," he said, discussing people wearing clothes to compete with others. "We were born into a broken world that's been separated by race, religion and class."
Co-host Charlamagne Tha God saw that as his opportunity to put West in the hot seat. "You do act like you're better," he said to West, specifically noting the incident with Beck at the Grammys.
Recalling the backlash, West admitted, "I deserved it. I was completely hypocritical ... the other day, I went to dinner and sat down with Taylor Swift. Ironically they were playing the Beck album ... maybe they did it on purpose so I could finally hear it. I was like, man, this is kind of good. I ain’t gonna lie.”
West admitted that he had never heard the record when he claimed Beck and the Grammys needed to "respect artistry."
"I bet you that album is really good," he went on. "I'm going to listen to that album and maybe it was potentially an Album of the Year."
He did mildly defend his actions as they pertained to the annual music awards show: "The Grammys still have a commercial component to it … they want to sell commercials … we work too hard to deal with all that, we don’t have time to deal with that … who’s winning? We ain’t getting any of that advertising money. That was my main point."
