Kelp Lovers Unite: The 4th Annual Maine Seaweed Week is Coming Soon
For all you kelp lovers out there, your week is almost here.
Maine's 4th Annual Seaweed Week is nearly upon us. This year's event will be held from April 22 to May 1st, and celebrating all things, you guessed it, seaweed.
Restaurants and bars across the state will be participating, and there will be many fun seaweed-inspired dishes and drinks. Pizza, pasta, snacks, cocktails and other items will be offered to patrons looking for that kelp kick.
There will also be stores participating as well as events associated with Seaweed Week, including a cooking class with James Beard-nominated chef, Cara Stadler.
Seaweed is a very healthy green. According to Healthline.com, seaweed can help with heart health, blood sugar levels, and weight control. It's also loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. This is a superfood that has been significantly gaining popularity, especially here in Maine.
In fact, Maine leads the nation in seaweed aquaculture. Currently, there are at least 35 official kelp farms in the state, with more popping up every year.
Maine seaweed even got national attention when Waldoboro's Lakin’s Gorges Cheese won a national award for their seaweed-infused Rockweed.
Seaweed Week was founded by the folks at Heritage Seaweed, a specialty shop in Portland. The store has an incredible variety of seaweed items including jerky, tea, and health and beauty products.
