One Campground to Rule Them All: Maine’s Most Unforgettable Spot
We Mainers are incredibly lucky to live in a state filled with such beauty and wonder.
Whether it’s the pristine lakes, awe-inspiring mountains, rushing rivers, or peaceful trails, Maine offers something for every outdoor enthusiast.
That includes the hundreds of amazing and diverse campgrounds scattered across the state. From remote backwoods sites to luxurious glamping getaways, Maine offers just about every type of camping experience imaginable. And there might be one that stands slightly above the rest.
Where is the Most Beautiful Campground in Maine?
I believe it was the summer of 1994 when I made my first trip to Baxter State Park. Our group planned to hike into Chimney Pond, camp there, and then summit Katahdin. I was 14 at the time and had never been to the park—I was in for an experience I’d never forget.
Chimney Pond and its campground are truly special. To begin with, there’s a beautiful 3.3-mile hike just to reach the campground. It’s a wonderful warm-up for a Katahdin summit. And, of course, any trip up to Baxter Peak is wonderous.
However, I’m not here to talk about those hikes—I’m here to tell you why Chimney Pond Campground is absolutely unrivaled in this state.
Chimney Pond Campground is One of the Most Special Places in Maine
Now, don’t get me wrong, Maine is full of incredible camping options. You’ll find them on the coast, on islands, in protected lands, and of course, in Acadia. But they all pale in comparison to Chimney Pond.
Technically a backcountry campground, Chimney Pond has been a park favorite since 1938. You won’t find much in the way of accommodations: just a few toilets, a bunkhouse, and a handful of lean-tos.
What Makes Chimney Pond Campground so Special?
But what it lacks in frills, it more than makes up for with some of the best views you can find in Maine. The campground sits right next to the pristine waters of Chimney Pond—arguably some of the cleanest in the entire country.
And then, of course, there’s the view of Katahdin. You could stand there for hours, never tiring of gazing up at the immense mountain in all its glory. There’s nothing quite like finding the perfect rock to perch on, looking up, and being completely blown away by just how beautiful this world can be.
Chimney Pond Campground is also one of the most peaceful places you’ll ever come across. Its small footprint and remote access only make it more desirable. It’s no wonder reservations fill up so quickly.

Like I mentioned earlier, there are many wonderful camping options across the state—and we’re undoubtedly better for it. But I just can’t imagine a better number one choice than Baxter’s Chimney Pond. It encapsulates everything that’s perfect about Maine’s wilderness and serenity.
