Maine Declared as One of the Least ‘Fun’ States in America

What might be viewed as fun by one person could seem boring to another. For every person that enjoys a thrilling roller coaster, there's another that enjoys the peaceful serenity of bird watching.

Which is why it is so difficult to put a clear label on which cities and states across America are more fun than others. But that didn't stop WalletHub from trying.

WalletHub has released their list of the most fun and least fun states in America for 2025. The results indicate that living in New England is incredibly boring.

5 New England States Ranked Amongst The Least Fun States in America

Apparently, living pretty much anywhere in New England is yawn inducing.

WalletHub ranked 5 New England states in the bottom 11 for fun. Maine came in ranked at 39 followed by New Hampshire at 42, Connecticut at 43, Vermont at 45 and Rhode Island near the bottom at 48.

Massachusetts is the most fun state in New England but it only ranked 34 overall amongst other states in the nation.

Why Did New England States Rank As Boring?

If you're wondering why New England is considered so incredibly boring by WalletHub, a look at the methodology they used should help explain things.

WalletHub gave states rankings based on two sets of criteria. The first was entertainment and recreation. That could include things deemed tourist attractions, amusement parts, movie theaters, arcades and restaurants. One key note is that only qualified cities were counted. Sorry rural Maine and Vermont, you don't count.

The second criteria was nightlife. That included average alcohol cost, nightclubs or live music venues per capita as well as time of last call. As you can imagine, states throughout New England ranked poorly here.
