Cutler, Maine, Lighthouse Named Among ‘Most Unusual’ Places to Stay in Nation
As the weather warms up, there's going to be plenty of adventures to have and places to stay at. Seasonal businesses and coastal communities come alive, and some of Maine's most unique restaurants, shops, and characters are meant to be experienced during the spring and summer.
LoveEXPLORING decided to scour the country in hopes of finding unusual and peculiar places to stay in every state across the nation. Some of the places on their list include a clown motel in Nevada, a giant potato house in Idaho, and a jailhouse-turned-inn in Rhode Island.
The choice for Maine makes total sense. LoveEXPLORING has named the Little River Lighthouse in Cutler as the state's most unusual place to stay, and one of the most unique in the nation.
The Little River Lighthouse was originally constructed in 1847. While both the original lighthouse tower and keeper's quarters were replaced later in the 1800s, both historic structures still stand today. They're both nearly 150 years old.
Plenty of circumstances led to the lighthouse eventually being abandoned before a non-profit took over the care on the iconic structure. Volunteers have tirelessly worked to restore the lighthouse and quarters to their former glory, which has led to the most unusual stay for visitors.
The Friends of Little River Lighthouse offer a chance for guests to book one of the three available rooms inside the keepers quarters from June through September. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience being a lighthouse keeper, if only for a night.
A chance to see an incredible sunrise and sunset during your stay (as well as world-class stargazing) makes the visit worth it.
