Maine Sea Goddess Forced to Step Down Over Photos on Social Media
When Taylor Hamlin was crowned 2018 Maine Sea Goddess at the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, she didn't foresee having to step down from the position in less than 24 hours.
According to the Portland Press Herald, Hamlin was asked to step down from her new title following the discovery of social media posts she had shared involving marijuana. One of the photos was from over a year ago in which she was holding a joint; another a few days before showed her holding a Juul, a device used for vaping.
Hamlin was told she could keep the prize money and carry out the duties of Sea Goddess for the remainder of the festival, but that she must turn in her resignation immediately after. Usually, the Sea Goddess holds the title until the next year's coronation.
In an interview with the Press Herald, Hamlin's mother Cindi recalled her family's excitement at the announcement of Taylor's title and reflected on the family tradition of volunteering at the festival.
“We will not be doing that any more,” she said.
In lieu to Hamlin carrying out Sea Goddess duties, Crown Princess Erin Dugan will step into the role, leaving no Crown Princess for 2018.
Maine Lobster Festival Representative Shannon Kinney lamented the situation to Press Herald:
“It was a really difficult decision,” Kinney said. “Somebody made a decision, and we’re all going to have to deal with it I guess.”
