Ice fishing just seems like a perfect Maine activity.

You get to experience the state's amazing frozen bodies of water while enjoying an adult beverage or two (hello, Allen's Coffee Brandy).

Some of you may even have those tricked-out ice shanties with a portable heater, 4G Hotspot, hot tub, and perhaps a king-sized bed. You get the point.

But ice fishing is also about, you know, the fishing. And one website has called Maine's largest lake one of the best spots in the country for it.

The popular outdoors site FishingBooker recently posted the article of America's nine best spots. It named a few here in New England, including Maine's own Moosehead Lake.

The northwestern Maine lake is best known for its cold water and considerable depth. It's a perfect recreational spot for Mainers and tourists alike. However, many will still call it a hidden gem due to its rather remote location in Piscataquis County.

The lake and its surroundings are stunning. This only makes the ice fishing experience that much better. On top of the fishing, the Moosehead area offers guests plenty of recreational options like Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and winter hiking.

Here is a little bit of why FishingBooker selected Moosehead Lake as one of the country's top destinations for ice fishing.

Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in Maine and as such it boasts enviable fishing opportunities. This elevated oasis is home to a variety of fish species with Brook Trout, Cusk, Salmon, and Togue being the most popular ones. Togue are cherished ice fishing targets around here and the annual Moosehead Lake Togue Derby just testifies to that fact.

Moosehead also has numerous stay and fish options for those looking to spend a significant amount of time in the area. Some of these even include fish fry's and other Maine-centric amenities.

The only other New England body of water on the "Best of" list is New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee. However, two lakes are better than none. It also means New England's accounts for nearly 25% of the list. Not too shabby at all.

Ice fishing season is here, folks. Time to get that ice auger fired up.
