Not long after releasing the first night of their 40th anniversary gigs in San Francisco on Nugs and LiveMetallica.com, Metallica have unleashed the video of their performance of "Trapped Under Ice" live from the Chase Center. You can check it out and crank it up below:

The first time Metallica performed this deep cut from Ride the Lightning was on Nov. 17, 1984, in Belgium, just a few months after the album was released. When Metallica put it in their career-spanning setlist to celebrate their 40th anniversary a couple of months ago, it marked only the 22nd time they played it live.

Needless to say, it was a huge surprise to the thousands of fans in San Francisco—and the thousands of fans streaming the show live in their living rooms all over the world.

The last time "Trapped Under Ice" was brought out onstage was in 2012 at Metallica's first Orion Music + More festival when they played Ride the Lightning in its entirety (which also included the live debut of "Escape").

The new live video gives fans an incredible view of the performance with shots of the entire stage and close-ups of James Hetfield and company; there's even a mic mounted on Lars Ulrich's kit that keeps an eye on the drummer jamming through the song.

""Trapped Under Ice," baby," Hetfield said as the performance wrapped up. "There is the beginnings of Metallica."

"Trapped Under Ice" was the third song performed on Dec. 17, 2021, following "Hit the Lights" and "Creeping Death." You can read our full review of the night and check out the setlist here.
