My First Speakeasy Experience in Portland, Maine, Was an Untouchable Vibe
I honestly have such an inner conflict with myself right now in writing about this, because I'm a person who loves to give hype when it's deserved, whether it's to a person or a place.
And there's no doubt this place absolutely deserves the hype because everything from top to bottom about this place is amazing. But, that said, I also feel like I'd be doing it a disservice by fully ripping away the mystique of it all.
So, I'm going to toe the line and at this point in this article, I have no idea if I'm even going to name this place. But, also, at the same time, if you do enough research you'll be able to figure out exactly what and where I'm talking about.
Portland, Maine, Speakeasy
I've lived in Maine for just over a year, but just recently discovered that there is a speakeasy in Portland. For all I know, there could be countless more.
Honestly, my favorite part happened as soon as I walked into the place with a friend from away, because before we entered, we had no clue if we were in the right spot or not just because of the outside appearance of the entrance -- which was one thing I absolutely loved.
The bartender literally had the best greeting ever for us, too, and regardless of what she said, it wasn't in a negative or judgmental tone.
You guys were out there for a little while, huh?
Just that greeting alone was on brand with the entire mystique of the place. As well as the other customers in there. Do you know how some places have a "type" of crowd? Not this place.
Look straight ahead when you first walk in, two businessmen were sitting right at the bar, looking like they were fresh out of a late night of work. Gaze to the left at a roundtable, and it was filled with a handful of women who could be my grandmother.
Throughout the remainder of the time we were there, people of all ages, shapes, sizes, genders, and cultural backgrounds funneled in and out. There was no "type," because this speakeasy truly is for everyone.
And the best part? It's also affordable for everyone, because every single drink -- whether it's a beer, wine, cocktail or liquor either neat or on the rocks -- $5. No tax added, none of that -- just as it is, a whopping five dollars.
Gaze around to little placards on the tables too, whether a roundtop, hightop, coffee table or something somewhere in between, and there are plenty of events there, too. Poetry nights every other Tuesday. Comedy nights on Thursdays.
And, my personal favorite that may make me create a regrettable Monday morning at work...
As you probably noticed, I decided not to name the place, and any mention of it in the pictures shown has been blurred out. I just couldn't bring myself to outright ruin the mystique of the place.
However, there have been some vague hints dropped throughout this article so if you pay close enough attention and do your research, you, too, will be able to take in the unmatched vibe of this amazing Old Port speakeasy.
Who knows, maybe I'll see you Sunday night for some tournament fun. SPOILER: I usually always lead with paper.
